Factory DVD Player

Has anyone upgraded the factory DVD player? I have an 03 X 6.0 and the DVD player will not play burned/copied DVD's. We copy the kids DVDs because they always end up scratched or ruined from being left on the ground (DVDs not the kids) until dad cleans out the back seat. All the other DVD players in the house including the portable DVD player play the burned/copied DVDs. I think the 03 DVD Player is just out of date and wanted to know if anyone has updated the factory DVD or have similar problems.

Compact, all-in-one, overhead DVD unit features a flip-down 7-inch, 16, LCD screen that folds neatly into headliner when not in use. Comes with remote control and two wireless headphones. System also plays CDs, MP3s, CDRs and CDRWs. Has RCA inputs for video games, VCR or camcorder. Can also work through vehicle’s stereo. Comes with vehicle-specific mounting hardware and installs in about an hour.

I have a 2003 Ford Excursion, and would really like to install a dvd system with the flip down monitor. The one in the picture above looks like it would work except for the ac/heat rear controls would be in the way. Is this true? Is there a unit that would work with the type of roof console that I have?
