Hi all. I recently went to flush my coolant but when I went to the auto supply stores in my town they didn’t have Motorcraft gold coolant and they told me I could use Prestone universal coolant. I went ahead and did it but wanted to know if that was a bad idea and if I should drain it again and order some Motorcraft gold to put in it
I believe that 2011 was the first year for ORANGE coolant in the F150.. Check you manual and see if it was GOLD ( Yellow), or ORANGE........... Was the coolant you drained out Yellow (Gold) ? Maybe it was flushed a few years ago and the yellow was installed ? If it was yellow and you used the Prestone Universal Coolant, that is OK, it is YELLOW also.
If it was ORANGE, then you should be using the FORD ORANGE or GM DEXCOOL... you can buy that at Wal Mart... You should NOT MIX the ORANGE and YELLOW.. You need a COMPLETE flush with several gallons of water and 3-4 cycles if you are going to change coolant TYPES.
then Preston Universal is not a good match.. You should drain it out, then refill with demin water, warm and flush again.. do it 3-4 times... then add the DEXCOOL antifreeze ( ORANGE).
If you flushed SEVERAL TIMES and have a good guarantee that there is no ORANGE left, then the Yellow is OK....ORANGE is actually a better option .......... EITHER needs a COMPLETE flush several times before installing the other.
