Guess I should have scrolled to the bottom of the page or atleast read everything, I never saw it before. What’s the usual preference for tunes now, hydra, 1023, gearhead or jelibuilt? The gearhead is supposed to be the best power with minimal smoke but I thought from reading on other forums some folks felt and might have even proved there’s still a decent chunk of power left on the table if gone that route.

It depends on what you want.

All of those listed above have their fans. PHP, Swamps, BTS, and others are in that mix too.

You can search some threads (lots to choose from) about tuners/tuning or start your own. We are pretty laid back in this forum so you won't get any "search first" blasts.

Each one has their pros and cons and somewhere in there you will find what suits you. The best part of the Hydra is that you can mix-and-match without having to send a chip in for reburn like the "old" days.

I ran GH for years and liked their tunes. Recently I tried 1023 tunes and loved them. I have removed the GH tunes from my Hydra.

I have not tried the included PHP tunes, but have heard some good and bad opinions.

Someday I would like to try SDK and Jelibuilt, but like the song says "sometimes someday never comes".

Your goals for the truck should be the most important factor in the tuner you select. Second should be the type of injectors the tuner you select prefers. Meet somewhere in the middle and be happy in the end.

If you buy your FFD injectors from Dusty, 1023; then he gives you his tunes for free. My 2 cents, from my research on the forum, buy new not remanufactured. I’ve been looking at 205/30’s from FFD. Dusty can always detune for EGT control with towing.

I called up Dusty and talked to him a bit, I think ill end up going with some 205/80’s. From what he was telling me it sounds like a good choice and if i decide to go for more power the potential is there

Will do, just about anything should be a huge improvement over what I have now. Both in power and cold starts.

Are the 205's considered hybrids? If they, are don't they suffer from slightly poorer atomization. Could/would that affect cold start?

I believe they are considered hybrids but I have no clue if they will have an issue atomizing as well. Guess I’ll have to look into that. I wouldn’t think it would be an issue, dusty is based out of Alaska and that’s what he recommended. Even still, my truck wouldn’t start yesterday with the oil temp at 40°, and it doesn’t like it at all at 50 or so but will start then usually.

When replacing the injectors and glow plugs, i read that so long as the valve cover gasket is intact there is no reason to replace it. What about the wiring harness under the cover? Before i place my order for the glow plugs and connector repair kit I’d like to know if i should order the new wiring harness for the injectors/ glow plugs. I have no clue what the condition is of the wiring

I'd just replace it for the sake of knowing that it's all new and you won't have to mess with it again for a long time.

That was my thought. I’d hate to change out a few parts and put it together hoping I’m done then something simple got screwed up when I could have spent s few more dollars and replaced it. Does anyone have a site that has a good deal on everything by chance? That seems to be the one major issue with ordering from 1023 is they don’t have the option to include plugs, wires and gaskets. I know, or am hoping I don’t need a new relay for the glowplugs since it got a stancor around a year ago

Use Bob at diesel o-rings or Clay at Riffraff for the parts you cannot get from 1023.

Done...

Riffraff Diesel is the place to go. Quick, OEM and great people. I don't think I need to say more.
