5.4 Engine sounds like a tractor engine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my 2010 ford expedition would start to sound like an old tractor and almost stall sometimes at idle or low RPM below 1500. Only does it occasionally, like every 1500k or so. It goes away when accelerating. No engine codes appear. Just changed the plugs and still does it, but less often.
there is about 75000miles.

It doesn't have enough oil pressure at the phasers to keep them in place. You can try the updated VCT solenoids in my signature Ford released them as a TSB to fix the noise. It probably also has a blown out chain tensioner bleeding off pressure.

YES replacing vvt solenoids is your easiest place to start. Just dont let the local auto store screw you hard. I am also looking at this problem right now on my 06 lincoln mark lt. ^^^^Thanks for tip on looking at the tensioner.

Your VCT and probably chain tensioner are done. Need to replace them before you end up need a whole engine. Also suggest the upgraded oil pump

Time for a timing job on it. One or both tensioners are probably blown, or VCT solenoids plugged up, or chain guides broken up, or oil pump shot, or phasers shot, or all of the above.

The best advice is to use ONLY OEM Motorcraft parts. DO NOT USE CHEAP AFTERMARKET CRAP OR YOU WILL BE PAYING FOR THE JOB AT LEAST TWICE OVER.
