360 fe Water problem

The whole that is circled in the picture use to have a pipe in it that rusted out. The hole hooks to the water pump via a short hose. Im wondering, can I drill and tap that whole and put a fitting on it in place without having to take the top off my motor? My theory is all the metal will just be in the water channels.

I cleaned up the hole and use a 3/8" pipe nipple then cut it to length after I installed it.

yeah thats basically what I am going to do, except my hole is going to be around 5/8ths once I tap it.

Was your pipe pressed in or threaded in before you had to modify it?

also, did you do it while the manifold was still in place?

This is where the by-pass hose is located. Pressed into the manifold is a 5/8" O.D. nipple that the by-pass hose clamps to.

When the nipple rusts and the hose is removed, some of the nipple remains in the hose, some of it remains in the manifold. Now you need a reamer.

yeah thats exactly what it is.I dont think I want to use a reamer... I am going to use a 17/32 drill bit so I can tap a 5/8ths hole. Do you see any problems with doing this in place or while the manifold is still on the engine?
