Red face woops!!

Well hear i go again, hey guy's i took off the water pump on a 68 390 motor, had to, changed the intake. Well here is the problem, i was thinking ( this is when i get into trouble) that i had a new nipple that came with the new intake, that goes from the intake to the water pump, so i ( like a dummy) destroyed the,(press in) nipple in the water pump!. Now i have to replace the little pipe that goes from top of w.p. to the intake manifold, can't find that size, of any kind of tubing, the inside of the pump hole (where the pipe goes) is .612 or so. I have a piece of ridged copper pipe (.625) dia. i am going to try that if that does not work what then?????????? Anybody? ever had that problem? Thanks MY 390

I've never removed the water pump to R&R an intake, even a cast iron one. If you needed to do that an intake gasket set would include WP gaskets. Pop the manifold loose, tilt the back of the manifold up and slide it off the hose. Reverse to install. My memory says the hose is 5/8" but the nagging doubt says 3/4".

Home Depot, the plumbing isle, copper pipe you'll see it fits like a glove. It comes in sections smallest being one that had a bulb nose on it.. not sure what that is for. I got a piece and used a pipe cutter to cut off a small piece. Inserted it into the intake then used a mallet to set it back and it managed to round(nipple) the end just perfectly for the hose to have a no slip rib. Works like a charm.. I see you need the one on the water pump itself be it should be the same easy fix "I think" don't quote me on it LOL

Well Bear, when you're doing an intake swap on a car like a Stang or Fairlane and going back in with an iron intake, (like a 428CJ unit) it's a tad easier to remove the waterpump than to fight with trying to stab that bypass hose onto the intake nipple while holding 95 lbs. in your out-stretched arms and trying not to disturb the intake gaskets in the process. Using a hoist to do it would be easier, but it's still really a two man job there.

I owned and raced a pair of 1969 428CJ in the Cobra models (based on the Fairlane body style) back in the early 70's and still never removed a water pump to R&R the CJ iron intake. So don't tell me about R&R manifolds in the Fairline body and what's required. I almost never had help either because it was in my garage late at night the night before race day.

I got my intake from PYP and the nipple was rusted through pretty bad so I drilled it out, pipe threaded it and installed a brass nipple. Worked great so far! Another worst case option would be to cap off both the waterpump and intake nipples and drill about a 1/8"-1/4" hole in your thermostat to allow the water bypass. At least thats what I was told to do if mine didn't work.

Well Bear, you're not the only one who had these cars either, but if you think it makes you feel more of a man than those who choose to do things the easier way, have at it. Just don't make light of someone who chose to remove the waterpump to make a manifold swap easier. Maybe he should have just called you to do the job for him.

I'm 22 and not such a little boy and it took me and my dad both to set my iron intake on w/ the motor on the stand. You can do a one man show but it's not worth the gaskets walking all over the place.

IF the water pump nipple is junk they just replace the entire pump. You can get a reman for 18.00 or a brand new GMB for 28.00 its not worth the hassle on a old (probably worn out) water pump.

Cool post! :)

If I'd know-ed that before... I would have changed both my rusty-iron-ones out when i had it apart. :)

That is 5/8" id air conditioning hose.
2 feet is a lifetime supply of bypass hose material? ;)

Permatex has some new(?) water pump RTV that's made for antifreeze/cooling systems.
Used it last time and so far so good. :)

Also I don't believe in gaskets. Every chance i get I leave them out, like on the rear plate of the water pump and the gaskets where the pump meets the block and around the thermostat and behind the timing chain cover.

On the input snout for my T18 I made a .016" brass shim to replace that gasket.

Wow, ask and ye shall receive. Thanks guys, i learn so much when i post a dumb question, it's usually the one i don't ask. As i said when i first posted, i had some 1/2" ridged copper pipe, it measures o.d. at .625, the old one was .612, or so. It fit perfect, with a little teflon tape on the end, and i used a 2.5 lb dead blow hammer to drive it in,. The water pump only had 1000 miles on it, so i didn't want to scrap it. It is a new ford pump, which i painted a old ford blue, while i had it off, it's gorgeous now.

Putting an old iron 4v intake on my 360and the nipple is really corroded. Came on here looking for a solution and found this thread. Does the old nipple come out easily? I'm thinking pliers, twisting, and tearing? Use some rtv on the copper tubing and give it the old interferrence fit? Hopefully it goes well.
