Hey, I'm 16 and new to FTE I've read a lot on here though. So, I'm 16 my first truck is what I've wanted since I was probably 10. its a 79 f350 4x4/w the 351m we picked it up from a family member. got it going pretty easy new fuel pump, accelerator pump, and she was running great by what I could tell would start at the turn of the key. it was running good and when I was driving it, it just died. now it will only idle and when I give it gas she dies. any ideas I was thinking maybe fuel starvation. any help will be appreciated.
Yes a fuel starvation problem could show itself that way. There may be a fuel filter threaded onto the carburetor where the fuel line connects. Best way would be to put a T- connector on the fuel line and use a fuel pressure gauge to see what’s happening when you step on the throttle.
If that checks out, I would probably start looking at the carburetor. Maybe rebuild or replace it.
I think you're on the right track! Get yourself a see-through fuel filter and replace whatever you have now. You may have a bunch of crud in the system if it's been sitting a ong time. Good luck and WELCOME to FTE - great bunch of people around here.
Yes, a piece of crud could have gotten stuck in your needle valve, I had the same symptoms when a piece of crud got stuck in my needle valve in the front bowl of my Holley 4 barrel.
thanks for all the help, yes there's crud in the gas tank sending unit was all rusty sat with very little gas in it im guessing, i cut all the stuff off the sending unit and just put a peice of hose on the pick up. i do have some questions of the brakes getting locked up
First welcome to FTE. From what you wrote about just putting a hose on your sending unit, bad idea. The tank needs to be dropped and cleaned out. You have a fuel strainer on the end of the sending unit. You're going to be getting that crud up to your carb. We don't want the problems that can cause.
