Strange as it may seem, I have seen the 66 armrests in photos depicted both ways, but which way is correct?? Do they mount with the large end towards the front of the truck or towards the rear??
Thanks Chad...and for the original photo to verify the cranks position helps! After studying them against my custom, full door panels I actually ended up putting them on backwards and they looked better that way. The taper of the armrest followed the rearward taper of the door panel insert. Photos to follow....and at least I won’t be surprised when the authorities inform me of the error of my ways. Thanks for the help!
Not to steal a thread, but, while we have the subject of armrests. Does anyone have the original angle clips that goes inside the door panel for mounting the armrests? I have the new clips but, looks like I have to cut the holes for them to clip in place? It's a 66 F100 CC and just have the round holes for installation.
Al:
I couldn't find mine so I just got four (1/4 x 20) cage nuts and filed the holes square. Snap the cage nuts in from behind. If you wanted more reinforcement when pulling the armrest to close the door, you could make a backup piece of sheet metal with the nuts either welded or cage nuts as described and pop rivet it into the door so that the nuts line up with the holes. I didn't go to that much trouble because I figured that the door metal was probably stronger than the rubber arm rest.
Thanks. So I'll have to make my round holes square. I have aftermarket arm rests and the screws that came with the clips go in at an angle through the armrests.. How did the cage nuts line up with the angle of the bolts thru the armrests? Can't see how everything lays flat with the bolt angle. Or is my pea brain missing something?
Al:
I should have pointed out that, the reason I used captive nuts, is that I had a set of complete (cover) door panels made. So I didn't have access through the lower access panel...it was covered. You could just as easily reach up and simply put a nut and washer on a 1/4 x 20 machine screw....or just use the spring nuts. To answer your previous question, the armrests actually sit square to the door panel and the screws enter at a 90-degree angle.
Have here photos of the armrests in the position I chose. Yeah, I went off track from the original post and added views of the finished interior....will post these to my build thread as well. The headliner is molded ABS from Hot Rod Doors, and it fit very well. I like the contoured fit!
