It was 1F here. It doesn’t get more single digit than 1.

The low in North Central PA Wed morning was -7. Today at 2:30 it is 45 degrees. So I got Old Betsy out to run and get up to temperature since it had been since early January that I drove her. But I didn't dare take her out on the streets. There is too much salt residue and melting snow.

Old man Winter still has a little life left in him, unfortunately. Here in "Winter Paradise" as this area was known to the natives when Lewis and Clark came through, I woke up to -1F this morning. Wind chill -18F. We had sideways snow from the North on Monday for about 18 hours. It's not expected to be above freezing for at least a week or longer. Normal temps this time of year is mid 40's. It looks like this cold wave is expected to cross the country, so bundle up.

They are predicting a high of 73F here tomorrow. Then a low of 16F Friday night.

I like winter. Really. I've camped in a tent on a frozen lake at -32F. And I love snow. (Not necessarily 5' of it. 2' is good.) But this bouncing from the 60s to the 10s is killing me. This I don't like.

Yesterday it reached 61° in north Central PA. Maybe the ground hog was right.

No experience with this. Just curious. Over time, does a salt residue accumulate where it's tough on vehicles when roads are wet in the non-snow months?

I can't answer for Abe in PA, but here in Kentucky you can see the white of salt residue on the shoulders of the road and blowing behind big trucks for about a month after the last snow/ice event. That is assuming we get a few good rains. Without the rain the time period can increase, but usually it's about a month.

Ive never timed it. I just use my visual senses and common sense. If we have a couple of good rains to wash the salt away, the road is safe to drive on after it is dry.
