That really sucks that Ford didn't include a built-in controller.
That said I'd get and install a quality Tekonsha Prodigy controller, they are about the best on the market.....
I had a Tekonsha in my Flex, towed a car hauler at max tow capacity (4500lbs). It worked GREAT! Highway speeds, city traffic, mountains, hills, etc. Plug n' Play installation, a quick adjustment, consistent, predictable, and smooth brake performance.
Tekonsha makes a great controller, I've had three of them.
One of the really innovative options they have is an RF controller the mountain the tongue of the trailer in is controlled with a handheld in the cab the plugs into the 12 V outlet. I installed one on my single axial utility trailer, and have toted with several different vehicles. No vehicle installation required beyond power to the last 12 V pin on the a seven pin connector. I've had great luck with the P3 and Prodigy as well.
