trailer brake controller required ?

this may be a obvious question, but i'm going to be renting a 6x12 enclosed trailer coming up soon that has trailer brakes, i'm wondering if i should buy a brake controller ? (can i get away without using a brake controller?) I will only be traveling about 12 miles with the trailer in tow.

You would be fine going that distance. You would be fine going a longer distance. If you are towing regularly and the trailer has brakes I would suggest it because it does save your truck brakes, but 12 miles is nothing.

Thanks for the info!

I'm also going to be renting a bobcat MT52 (weight close to 3k), going the same distance you think i'll still be good ? not sure what sort of trailer the rental place provides.

In MN State law requires to have brakes working on trailers with a GVWR over 3,000LBS; without a brake controller the brakes would not function on the trailer. So you may want to check with your state to see what is legal to do in your state. You would probably be fine, but if you were to get into an accident and you were suppose to have brakes working you may be opening yourself up for some liability damages. Just a thought?
