I just noticed that on page 13 (very Btm right, note #2) of the new 2011 Super Duty Brochure says: "Trailer Brake Controller verfied to be compatible with electrically actuated drum brakes only."
So, if I have a new 1/5th whl trailer with disk brakes it's not compatible & have to buy another controller also? That sounds screwy!!
The factory contoller in my 05 wouldn't work with the Elec/Hyd. drum brakes that was on a 2003 model trailer. Dexter axle said they changed some things to make the newer trailers work with the factory controller. I just put a second brake control and a second 7 way connection on my truck. Now alot of the newer trailers have Elec/Hyd. disc brakes. I just wish all this stuff was more standerdized.
Ford has been putting that CYA statement in their documents since the introduction of the IBC. There are only one or two brands of brake controller that are not compatible. I have a Dexter system on my triple axle trailer and I love the integration between the Dexter hydraulic disk brakes on the trailer, the IBC and the transmission Tow/Haul mode.
If you have a Carlisle system, you may need to purchase an extra module from Carlisle to make the IBC compatible.
As a last resort, you could always do the Government Motors Corporation IBC fix and wire a couple of brake magnets into the wiring to fool the IBC.
