I have a Lariat and as such, my bumpers are chrome. I would have opted for the sport but options didn't fit me and neither did delivery thinking. What is the general opinion on color matching? Powder coat ie auto paint. Thank you
Vinyl wrap them, if you paint them they will look like Swiss cheese after a while. Powder coat might be a viable option since you have black. Vinyl is cheap and lasts forever though.
Painted cars for years. Can you paint over chrome? Yes... yes you can. Will it hold up for years to come? No... no it wont. No matter which coating you use, you have to strip the chrome either through a dechroming process, or by sand blasting. Sanding it does not cut it. If the chrome is scuffed and then painted or powder coated, it will look good, until the rock chips set in. It is a BAD IDEA. Powder will hold up a little better than paint, but its not a miracle coating. Most large powder coating operations should be able to help you. They can either blast or use acid to de-chrome your bumpers. Once the chrome is stripped you can weigh your options on powder or paint. If you are trying to color match, paint will be your best bet, It just needs a properly prepared substrate before refinishing.
Thank you for that complete answer. I have contacted a PC shop but we are having problems finding a match for the new Agate Black. I guess it's just a waiting game now
My ‘18 F350 was a Lariat with chrome. It’s not too far from you, take a trip to Santa Clarita (no. LA county), this guy is the best. Full disclosure, I do not work for or have an interest in this company, but Chris the owner, one11ink.com took great care of me, and the work has lasted 4 years and still looked good when I traded up for a ‘22 F350 Lariat sport package.
If you notice Chris even did the ford logos and the fender badges
anyone ever tried to do a color match Line X on chrome bumpers?
When I asked my local Line-x shop about this they required sandblasting first for proper adhesion. They quoted me $100 per bumper just to sandblasting. He did say that they send them out to have this done so it might be cheaper to pay someone directly.
don't wrap them - i had it done, doesn't last and is a huge pita the remove once its pitted
don't linex them - i had it done, they will rust from the inside out and leave rust streaks in the process
