I finally figured out how to use Forscan. (Just the basics so far)
Anyway, I did a check on the sensors and found the Coolant temp sensor was reading -4
I bought a sensor from Autozone and installed it. Now my temp gauge does not move.
The coolant sensor shows -168 and then drops to -140 after a few minutes. Why the negative numbers?
I have tried to find out if there are 2 coolant temp sensors on my engine.
I have a 2000 F550 with the 7.3 by the way. I read the reviews on the Autozone site and someone said that the sensor I bought was for the ecm not the gauge, but when I took the connector off of the sensor and grounded the red wire, my temp gauge pegged.
Are there 2 sensors? The one I changed is down by the thermostat housing. If there is another one, where is it?
Thanks for any help.
Guessing you too have a ZF6 since i hear these autos don't have coolant sensors, just a formula based off engine oil temp? One thing you'll see mentioned time and time again is Motorcraft/International brand sensors only on these motors. All other brands will fail out of the box or within a few months. Buy once cry once
The algorithm must be off on Forscan that’s why your numbers are off, I get the same thing using UltraGauge. If you want a true Coolant temperature you’re going to need a separate gauge and tap in water pump or into Coolant filter if you have one. As Wesley mentioned only OEM sensors you’ll save yourself a lot of time and headaches.
IIRC when I replaced mine the parts house sensors looked identical in size, shape, and electrical connector but with an ohm meter read 10 times the resistance.
