I'm about to buy a 1999 F-53 motorhome with a V-10. While I was inspecting before I test drove I noticed this port that appears to be open when it shouldn't be. It is located on top of the engine above the #5 cylinder (passenger-side rear of engine). It has a gasket that fits the engine side of the port, however, the fitting on top of it is bolted to one side of the port and doesn't cover the other.
Because the heads can theoretically swap sides with additional machine work.
Instead of 2 different gaskets, they all make the same gasket for both sides.
If it was on the other side it would have the thermostat housing over it.
If they made 2 different gaskets there would probably be 50% of people on here wondering about the hole AND complaining that their thermostat housing leaks.
The hole doesn't go anywhere, it's just there.
It is supposed to be like that.
It isn't going to leak provided that you have torqued the intake bolts correctly.
Everyone freaks out the first time they see it, but that's just the way it is.
I wasn't quite freaking out, I looked into it etc. and it looked like it went nowhere. The thing I couldn't get over is the half-utilized gasket complete with O-ring.
What's funny is, most who notice this "hole to nowhere" have vans
Interesting . . . I'd guess that's because vans tend to get the wheels driven off of them therefore cause more maintenance to be needed therefore have more people looking under the dog house . . . while Class A motorhomers maybe seldom look under there at all . . . ?

No, because those with vans can get the doghouse off
F-series, who the heck looks all the way back there unless they are REALLY digging around ?
Ah yes, that makes sense. It's easier with many class A motorhomes. Usually just two latches then lift (while sitting on nice carpet with optionally-activated HVAC and the TV going). This is the first time I've thought to myself "after I get this thing I can wait until snows to do spark plugs".
