E-brake hole gasket made

The original gasket that filled the hole in my floorboard of my 55 F350 where the e-brake lever goes through was wasted. It looked like it melted.

The gasket was split so half went below the floorboard and half above.

It is a very soft foam rubber. I searched all winter for the right foam rubber. I went into craft stores looking for foam with my wife where I normally sit out in the car and wait for her. I figured it should be closed cell. I found nothing. I even looked on-line. I paid $5 for two closed cell sheets from a huge foam rubber company. They weren't the right softness and not pliable enough.

So I used rubber from old interlocking foam mats my wife uses at her preschool. I cut two pieces and glued two together. It didn't work. Too rigid.

So I cut up an old floating pool toy and tried that. It was the right thickness. It was more pliable than the foam mat. I slit the sides like the original. Observe.

Very interesting, I love to see people posting the smaller jobs. Imo every thread cant be, and shouldn't be a NASA level thread. I just really enjoy everyone's day to day progress as well, as the big build threads. Pretty cool idea Abe, keep em coming.

Thanks guys. I posted this so other guys with the bigger trucks with the emergency brake through the floor can make one for themselves.

Hey, I'm surprised no one busted me on the blue showing through the floor mat. I think I'll paint it black.

Ha ha! I tried to find an NOS one. Number Dummy said a place in Iowa had one. I called. He said it was for 57 to 60 something. He said the part number was the same, so I bought it, he sent it, it didn't fit, I sent it back. So if a blue pool toy gasket means I'm a Darksider, then I want some cookies!

That's pretty neat. I will make or fabricate something I need. Like when I cut a circle out of a thick plastic bread board to make the steady bearing at the bottom of my steering column. My wife just looked at me and rolled her eyes.

Well that's clever! I love it when us classic vehicle owners our heads to come up with perfectly viable alternatives. And this certainly qualifies!

I spray painted it black today.... Didn't want to look like a customized Darksider!

I just love threads like this.
Not only do I enjoy the creativity but I like to see the stockers take the first tentative step out onto that slippery slope. Oh sure, you tell yourself that its a necessary evil and its not really customizing, after all, its only a small piece of foam to plug an insignificant hole in the floor. But, the next thing you know, you are reaching for a screw type band clamp instead of the wire clamp on the heater hoses, or griping and carping about accidentally tipping over the oil bath air cleaner while trying to stop that leak on the old glass bowl carburetor, or other such nonsense.

...I can almost smell the cookies now...

Oh, I almost forgot...Nice job!

Hahaha,...cookies all around. That's what cool about this site. Your allowed to think outside the box. Why should aftermarket store dudes have all the fun.
