There is some key information in this post... I've had several steering wheels now with galled up threads inside the wheel because the previous owner did not know what size bolt to use and simply stuffed whatever they had inside to pop the wheel off the column.
If you have the time, grab some cutting oil and a tap and run it through the threads before yanking the wheel off the column.
The proper way is to use a bolt with a flange nut it prevents the bolts from wandering and keeps the bolts ridgid. The thread is 5/16×24. Put the bolts with washers through the puller, then spin on both of the flange just with the flange facing the wheel, keep the nuts high on the thread, thread the bolts into the wheel, then tighten the flange bolts to the wheel face. That was the method used in the shop service manual.
