Steering wheel problem

Im not sure where to post this.
I bought a steering wheel puller and the damn thing stripped out the threads in the steering wheel. How in the world do I get it off now? Any ideas?
Thanks, jdog

I had stripped holes in my steering wheel so I got some bolts 1 size larger and just cranked them in there. I guess you could use a tap to tap new threads in for the larger bolt but I didn't need to. The bolts more or less threaded themselves in there.

Another way (but definitely not the best way) is to get someone in there in front of the steering wheel and have them wedge their legs behind the steering wheel between the dash and wheel. Have them pull really hard. Then you use a brass drift and a amall 10-12 oz. hammer and whack the center (steering shaft) a few good licks. That has always done it for me in a pinch.

You don't want to use too big of a hammer though because it is possible to damage the steering column and loosen the shaft resulting in lots of endplay. A few whacks with a small hammer will do it. Speaking of whacks with a hammer, that's what my therapist said about my bum brain, too.

What year/model is your truck?
I just did mine today and had the same problem.
if it has the same setup as my '95 you won't be able to tap in new threads as they are blind holes and not very deep, but if you only pulled the threads once you can try next size up bolts.
try to use a fine thread and if possible a grade 8 or "drill steel" bolt. and make sure you put cap nut on if you have the hollow shaft.
good luck

addendum to last reply.
one trick that has worked for me in the past with tough steering wheels is to take up the tension with the puller and get it as tight as you can before the possibility of any slippage and then get out the trusty ball peen hammer and tap the puller bolt a few times, not too hard . often just tapping it a few times will pop it free without even having to put the socket back on it.
