I have been thinking that I have a "bad" exhaust manifold leak for a week or so because mileage went down after I replaced the manifold and I swear I hear a ticking on the driver's side. I just installed some Glowshift gauges though and I can make 18 lbs of boost unloaded going up hill with the peddle floored. My truck is stock tune (I have a Hydra but it was in 01 position which is stock) and the only real mod I have is an S&B air intake. Does this sound like low boost for my setup? Maybe I am imagining the manifold leak...... Fuel pressure is around 68 and EGT's seem to be 500 to 600ish or so once she warms up a bit.
The PCM defuels at 22-23 # of boost. If you’re getting 18, and if you consider maybe a margin of error with the gauge of 2-3# ...you’re probably doing alright. You can test for leaks and you’ll KNOW if you have one. When are you seeing EGT’s of 500-600…?
I was going through the same thing not to long ago. Make a boost leak tester and pressure test the system. I found small leaks all over the place in my truck. Fittings, guages, etc. A bunch of small leaks aren’t noticed when just driving around. However can make a big difference when wanting performance.
Not the exact thread I was thinking of but this gives you the basics. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ctor-pics.html
Just remember to start low on the psi. Like 15psi, I normally regulate down my compressor so I can leave the air line hooked up.
Was actually wondering the same thing. The top number I've seen is about 18 and that was hammer down. With my normal driving style the highest I see is 10psi. I have oil soaked boots so those are on the list to replace and could possibly be affecting my pressure.
Thanks all - great information in this thread! I actually have a boost pressure test kit but haven't used it yet, time is precious this year (I have a new 1 year old to chase around!). I am also close to taking the plunge into a T4 upgrade that will allow me to replace almost all of the common leak areas and will boost test after the upgrade.
Stock Truck, no mods, minimum leaks, 15-18 is all u get. start pulling hoses, doing mods, spending obscene amounts of money buying shiny stuff without bulletproofing the maintenance stuff, then u start breaking stuff....
I was getting 13-14 psi on completely stock 2000 F450 zf-6. Then rebuilt turbo with Riffraff billet wheel, red line mod, 8 turns in on wastegate actuator rod, bellowed up-pipes, and boost leak check - now I might touch 15 psi.
Yeah I definitely am going to leak check as soon as I get around to doing all the boots. Any suggestions on boot kits? Sinister seems to be the better deal over RiffRaff but I like RiffRaff so I'm torn. Shockingly RockAuto was fairly expensive.
Welcome to FTE! Make sure you hop over to the new member thread and introduce yourself. You need a couple of posts before you can put up pictures or send PMs. Thanks for the suggestion, that does look like a pretty good deal.
Update for the thread. I just used my 80 HP Daily Driver tune and I can make 22 lbs of boost flooring the truck. I think she's pretty good with minimal leaks. I am going to "re do" the turbo boots and pipes and install bellowed uppipes when/if I do the T4 upgrade and I can also remove the exhaust manifold gasket and go metal to metal at that point as well (I don't think its "bad" to leave the manifold gasket on until then).

Update - did another leak check, rotated a couple IC piping clamps and retightened, now top out at 17psi.

Did you use the gasket and new hardware? That's one you definitely don't want to have to re-do. You'll probably get exhaust fumes in the cab when idling with the HVAC blower on if you have a *bad* exhaust leak. This was the case with mine anyway. That boost is about right for a stock truck though. I could only get mine to hit 15 back when I had the boost gauge hooked up and before the manifolds and up-pipes got fixed.
