Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. It's dried out a bit and hanging in at 39. Clear skies with a fog bank moving up over the coast range...
Jim & Evan, Thanks. I think I'm leaning toward the Magpul poly's. Reviews seem good and price for a set is reasonable. I don't want to put a scope on this one but a red dot is something I was thinking about. I'm a Vortex fan so I might look into one a little later. At first glace I thought maybe a red dot wasn't legal to hunt with but it looks like it is. Not going to really hunt this rig as it's more of a plinker although I might use it for yote's when and if I get a caller. We have them around our place so thought it would be fun to sit on the deck and see what shows up.
Here is what I have so far...Just missing a flash hider, BCG, and sights. It's taken me 8 months or so to get this far.
What was supposed to be a budget build ended up a little more than planned. Big surprise. I cheaped out on the hand guard and wish I hadn't but it will be fine for what I'll use it for. I even built the upper since I wanted the entire "experience". I've bought everything locally as I figure if I have a problem, they would help me out. Next one will be my hunting rig and will be in 7.62x39 with a 18 or 20" barrel. I should have built this in 7.62 but at the time, I didn't know I could do that. Lot's of learning going on...
Looking Good Rich. R&J has a lot of stuff and they are "just around the corner". I have no problem with the Vortex. I've got a couple Cabela's branded Vortex Scopes. I don't have any of their red dot stuff. I've got a couple of red dot and a holographic from other companies and I've thrown two NC Stars away. One of those you select red or green and one of 5 different sight apertures - from dot to circle with cross hair. They turned out to be garbage. (The were presents the kids got me). Wouldn't hold a zero, every single shot was 6 to 12 inches from the last POI.
Two of the rifles in the Pic's are 7.62 NATO. I love them. They have become my primary deer guns. The S&W M&P 10 LE model has also become the go to backup for elk hunting - or primary if I'm in the pucker brush or an area where a belted case magnum isn't the best choice. The 'dogs' out on the farm absolutely hate them.
The kid on the farm down the road had one of those. He always got the really fun stuff. I got a 'Fanner 50" and a Mattel Winchester Model 94.
Now days any parent who would get their kids one of those or a GI Joe set would be brought up on child abuse charges and their kid kicked out of school.

My brother was going to by my a cannon that actually worked but my parents put the kibosh to that...lol I can't remember the name of the toy, maybe it's on YouTube too..
R&J have treated me well and they are fairly competitive price wise with the online retailers. They seem to know AR's pretty well. The fact they are literally down the road is good and bad. haha. The lower I bought from TJ's and have nothing but good things to say about them too. I ended up with 3 stripped lowers from TJ's as they had these from a foundry in Albany that were reasonably priced. I think they did 90 or 100 of them for a first run. I liked that they were made local and two of them are consecutive serial numbers. I have a SKS so I already have 7.62 ammo. Not sure why I or how I missed that one can do an AR15 build with the round. I wanted to do an AR10 in 308win until I found out the cost. The 7.62 will be fine for deer and such.
Evan, nice looking rig. Looks like a pistol? I'd like to build one of those as well.
The Johnny Seven OMA...what a cool toy. Can you imagine trying to sell those now.
Rich, the one I posted is a pistol. 10.5” in .223 Wylde (can shoot 5.56 or .223). Mainly a fun and home defense rig. I hunted two seasons with my AR10 and it just wasn’t for me. It was heavy and felt bulky. I took a cownelk and a buck with it. Now I’m looking forward to hunting this year with my new Howa.
Good evening Oregon and everyone everywhere else. Had to make a trip into W. Salem this afternoon.
I had some personal bias against AK 47's and the 7.62X39 so I never really got into them. On the other hand I had a ton of 7.62 NATO around from the competition days and a lot of support equipment for it. Still have a lot of the 7.62 X 51 around.
Happy Friday all. Such a nice day yesterday I was doing fencing, cleaning up some fields of branches that had fallen and stuff outside. So I got nothing done on the "Princess Palace" will finish the trim this weekend and the lights and fan in the bathroom. Bathroom is 10'x16' but has dual sinks, shower, claw foot tub, washer and dryer and the Incinolet (https://incinolet.com). Or what I call the crap cremater. Great for shops!
