Just had my first failure on my 2016. Went in to start it, turn the key, nothing. Remote start it starts fine, but put the key in, and it immediately quits with a "Starting system failure" on the LCD. I was initially assuming batteries were going, as they are about 3 years old. Then I tried my extra key, and it worked just fine. I'm assuming the chip in the key went bad. Before I replace it, any chance the BCM or whatever stores the codes for it, just lost its knowledge of that key?
I’ve seen codes in the BCM cause odd things, for example on an F150 the brake lights weren’t working, along with that the truck would start but you could not shift out of park. Cleared the code using FORScan (a generic reader didn’t see the code) and it started to work.
It would not surprise me for there to be a code keeping that key from working, but most likely I expect the RFID chip in the key has failed.

Thanks Dave, I suspect that too. I can't recall specifically, but when I got in my truck this afternoon after work, the last time the key worked successfully, I think I recall getting a static poke. It was probably just after PATS read the chip as I had done a remote start, and the poke happened just as I was inserting the key and turning the ignition to run, and had I shut the truck off and tried to restart then it probably would have failed then.
I supposed I cannot order a key from Tousley Autonation Ford at a discount either. I realize I can probably program the key using Forscan, I just don't want to pay parts counter prices for the key, and to have to make an appt to have them program it. Seems to alway turn into an all day event...
while you are at it....buy a cheap 80 bit PATS key or two. Cut it/them and program it/them after you get the initial two programmed. That way you will have 2 keys later for programming a new key or reprogramming an old key.

Larry, I did that when I first got my 2016, and after the struggle of finding someone who would cut them, I couldn't get them programmed in. I even found a Ford dealer that would do it, and they could not program them in either.
Never had any problems with the 80bit keys off eBay...have bought and programmed like 10 of them for my vehicles and parents....they still work today...i keep one hid in the truck at all times...
I just ordered a couple of remote start 80bit keys from eBay. I'll give it another try. Now, am I able to reprogram with Forscan? Ive got all the required parts, I've just never made any changes.
