Question Gearshift pointer

I have the shift linkage working on my 1981 F100, but the pointer for the PRND21 on the instrument cluster is not moving. Anyone have a diagram showing what I need to repair/replace, and is this an item that LMC would carry?

If you take off the black plastic piece that wraps around the steering column you should see a white sheathed cable that comes from the dash cluster, wraps clockwise around the steering column and loops over a pin. The cable and a spring is what moves the indicator.

I looked on Gary's site but didn't find a diagram besides a partial image of the cable on the steering column page. If you need something tonight I can run out to the shop and take a photo of a pulled steering column that has the gear shift indicator hanging on it.

If the cable is broken I think your best best is replacing the indicator and cable as 1 piece from a junkyard. You might be able to replace the cable but I've never looked to see how it attaches inside the indicator.

It's probably broken, the "cable" is very brittle plastic. Basically, it's a small plastic tube with a string inside it. It's very easy to break it if you try to pull the cluster without disconnecting it first.

Now the big question, Is this an 80-86 part only, or will something from an 87-91 work?

Since the cluster changed in 87 I would guess this changed also. Never looked at an 87 so again, just a guess. Have a jy around you? Should be able to find one pretty easily. The white sheath has a good chance of being cracked but functionally it will still work.

Here I said I'd never looked at how it attaches inside the indicator but I guess I should have said I never paid attention 😊

Here is the one out in my shop. I didn't pull the cover off the column but there's not much going on under there besides a little clip and then a black plastic screwed on pin the cable hooks to.

Yes, there's a junkyard about 3 miles west of my place

1987/91 will not work.
1980/86 is the same if the trans is a C4/C5/C6.

If it's an AOD, 1981/82 is one type, 1983/86 is different.
