FL299 suitable for a small block?

Back in auto parts world here, I was selling a guy his FL1A and he asks me if there is a larger filter available. Did some digging and came across the FL299 which has the same measurements as the 1A - except it's 7 inches long. The FL1A is only 5 1/4". He just wanted to know if he could run it, I wasn't sure if there would be flow problems with something that size. Any thoughts?

A larger body filter will have more surface area of filter media, and thus a lower pressure drop across it for a given volumetric flow rate. So, as long as it physically fits, should work just fine. Not sure what his goal is though? Longer change intervals? FL1A is pretty big for a small block, holds about a quart of oil. 5.8L used a FL820S (with cooler), much smaller (to clear frame) than the FL1A on a 5.0L.

I didn't ask what he was hoping to get out of it, he just wanted to know if there was something larger, any drawbacks, etc. Thanks though

The FL299 is a terrible filter, that filter was used on FT engines and 370 and 429 industrial engines. It has a micron rating of 32. The FL1A filters down to 20 microns. If you want longer wix makes one that is 9 inches long and filters down to 18 microns but it's like 30.00.

Ah, yeah, that's the more important information.

I guess he was thinking a bigger filter would filter better than a smaller one? My 24V Duratec Taurus uses the FL820 filter. I change the oil every 3-4K miles The engine has 403K miles and counting....

The FL 299 is just longer and has same size oil insert threading. We used it for racing in the 60's and 70's. Ford released FL-1-HP, High performance. Also, FL 400 S and FL 300 S has same size oil insert but shorter. If you have the same, use FL 1 A or FL 299. FL 299 was designed for Medium and Heavy Duty Ford Trucks. Good lcuk
