Oil Filter Mounting
Oil Filter Mounting
I recently got a '92 460 long block and I was about to prime the oil pump when I remembered to put the oil filter on. Well I tried but I couldn't because there is some kind of adapter threaded into the block. It take an 1 1/4 socket to take it off and it has no stud in the center to thread the filter on instead it has female threads. What do I need to set this up for the standard truck filter installation?
There is a cast housing that fits on the block, and is secured to it by a large hollow bolt - hence the female threads. A large O-ring seals it to the block.
The casting redirects the filter forward and down. Most have 2 tapped and threaded bosses for installing oil cooler lines; many of those are plugged.
The casting has the proper threaded stud and machined surface for mounting the oil filter.
You can see them on E-bay occasionally. In fact, there are 3 on right now as I write this. They are for different applications, so make sure you get the right one - with the bolt too. Search for "Ford 460 oil" to bring them up.

you can also pull that adapter off of a 5.0 mustang or linclon, or look for a 370/429 in a medium duty truck they use the same one, or you can go to your local ford dealer or parts house (sometimes) or machine shop and get the right adapter for just putting the oil filter on if you don't need to redirect your oil filter for clearance purposes. Most machine shops, or at least good ones will put new threaded adapters in the blocks when they work on them just for safety sake and keep some on hand, my machine shop buy his from the local ford dealer.
