Any one have anything to say about oil filter re-allocation? I have one on my F-250 to clear the small block oil filter on a big block frame (that is, without cutting a big hole in the frame!), and I was debating if it would matter which direction I would mount it in. Would all the oil run out of the hoses and filter if I mounted it upside down?
Why not try to fit a smaller filter on it? I would be afraid of oil not circulating back to the filter "clean" to the engine...it may just bubble and not do anything from the way you described.
Which of your trucks are you talking about? On F250/350s (the only ones equipped with big-block engines after 1978), there is no different frame for different engines.
I've never heard of this problem before.
Doesn't your front frame crossmember have an access hole on the left side? Or is the filter on the small-block too far back to use that access hole?
If you relocate the filter, position it right side up (hole at the top). Otherwise, air is more likely to get trapped in the filter, and you will have a huge mess everytime you change it.
Well, its my F-250. It has a '90 frame that original had a 7.3L diesel sitting in it from the factory. The spot that where the oil filter sticks through just has two slots, and doesn't have the big round hole where the oil filter goes (like both my f-150s have below the driver side 300-6 motor motor, and the original frame for the f-250 had). I saw an '85 F-350 dually that had a 460 in it, it had a filter kit too, but I think it had a 6.9L diesel and the guy swapped a 460 into it.
I don't think the frame is different, just the crossmember (that isn't really easy to change, has factory welds etc etc).
Maybe just the diesels had different crossmembers. Never seen a factory 460 install
