Final update. Just installed the standard AMP Power steps and they are about 2" lower than the n-Fabs. Now my wife is happy and I'll admit that the truck looks better without the old steps sticking down.
I experienced the same concern when shopping and driving, and went with factory power steps because they dropped lower, wider, and came out further from the body. Amp Research makes them, you could get them aftermarket.
Same here - went with the power steps they drop lower. No issues with the little woman.
The running boards are one of the options I really wrestled with. We have the power boards on the wifes 2017 Expedition and like them. But, they offer little to no protection to the bottom and sides of the truck. There is no doubt the power boards also look better and make it easier to enter and exit. In the end decided to go with the full length running boards and protect the paint better.

I installed the aftermarket AMP Research boards on my 2011 Super Cab and later on my 2015 Crew Cab--installed them myself both times and they have been amazing. Bent one of the stock 2011 OEM boards on a boulder in the mountains when a sharp rock punctured a tire so I needed to replace them. When I purchased the 2015, it was one of the first things I added and by then, AMP Research had the new plug-in connector option. In my opinion, the truck just looks a lot cleaner without the boards hanging down and you get additional ground clearance on the sides. You also don't have to deal with snow and ice on them in the Winter and the difference in drop and position is very noticeable.
I was very happy to see Ford including them on the new trucks and ordered them on my new 2019 due to arrive in about a month.
