It is attached to the back of the fusde block under the dash. There are 2 big wiring harnesses that plug into the back of the GEM.
Courtsey of: robs01f250 right here on FTE - do some searching and reading and you will find lots of good information. Best site around IMO for our Superdutys
Its right where the water goes if you have a leak on the drivers side - take the drivers side pillar trim off and you will see a water trail in the dust on the inside of the piece. I found out mine was leaking because my radio stayed on after I shut the truck off one day??? Weird stuff happens when that thing gets wet.

thanks for your reply. .. would you say this is the gem?? This is behind the stereo, looks like I'm going to have a hell of a time getting to it.
That aint the GEM. Its the VSS module. It CAN be had by removing the lower/trashbag area cover. Only held in by 2-13mm nuts...been there a yr ago getn a new one reprogrammed
What he said???
What year is your truck. GEM is behind the fuse panel but only through 01(i think) 02 and up have a VSM and it is behind the radio

and this is the info conflict I've been running into. I have a 2003 f350., so the picture I just posted is a vsm? And there's a gem behind the fuse box?
and if I have a vsm, does it pretty much have the same function as a gem? Would this be the intermittent windows and radio? ?
The older trucks have a GEM. The newer models, your 2003, do not have one. The VSM, with some slight differences I believe, handle functions the GEM did in the older trucks. Can't say if the item in the picture is a VSM or a security/ keyless module. Try getting the whole part number off of it and google.
he should still have the fuse panel in same location, and from what i read its the real problem more often then the gem when water gets in it.
Thanks skip.. Assuming I fix the leaks.. What would be the fix for this fuse panel?? Rebuild it?? I can't find any new ones oline any more.. Are there compatible fuse panels?? Thank you for the info

i think you just take it apart and then file holes in the houseing to drain water when its back togeather, personally if i had time i would just remove it and file the holes then stick it in a bowl of rice to absorb the water and a week later reinstall, maybe fabricate some type of water barrier like some plastic wrap or a tupper ware container to divert the water around it.
on my 02 i had all the same usual symptoms.
instead of taking the truck apart, i pulled the windshield out of it. results:
#1: there were two holes about the size of a quarter on the bottom of the windshield frame allowing water in every time it rained where the factory clips were that held the glass in place when it was installed.
#2: on each top corner, the seam sealer failed allowing water to get into the "A" pillars every time it rained.
#3: on each lower corner there was a hole about the size of a dime allowing water in every time it rained.
#4: on each side about midway up there were spots about 2-3 inches long where the glass sealer was no longer adhered to the metal, allowing water in every time it rained.
i stripped the complete windshield frame to bare metal, and repaired all the holes and missing seam sealer. i then primed and painted the complete frame, and then applied a good coat of ford windshield primer before putting a new windshield and gasket in.
end result is not a drop of water in the cab in over 18 months now, and all the problems i had went away once the inside of the cab dried out.
