FoMoCo never called it a Sport mirror. This is the ridiculous name that LMC gives to the 'standard equipment' left side Passenger Car type mirror, shown as TYPE 5 in pic.
The 1967/72 mirror is the exact same as the Passenger Car mirror (C7AZ-17696-G), the 1973/79 mirror has a larger mirror head (D3TZ-17696-L).
There are no parts available for these mirrors, when the mirror head begins to sag, or the glass breaks, it's time for a replacement.
its a mirror similar to type 5 in the picture. the base that attached to the door is what is giving me trouble . just looking for ideas on a fix. I have new mirrors so they are good to go. just need to figure out how to install securely to the door.

You might consider foregoing replacing the rivet nuts and use stainless steel screws with body washer on the inside of the door and stainless steel nylon lock nuts.

I like the rivet nut inserts pretty good, use them on many things
I have the same issue on my tailgate . cant figure out how to fix that either. the bracket that holds the latch on the tailgate has a similar arrangement. apparently the threaded part inside the tailgate fell out and now I have nothing to screw the bolt to.
Just google nutsert ,, it takes a special tool to install but its not that expensive,,search ebay,,there the same thing that held your mirror on originally on most
