Changing fuel filters?

How much fuel should drain out of the frame mounted filter when changing filters? I changed mine today and got about a gallon of fuel out of the filter. Is this normal? Thanks.

to prevent the siphoning effect, you should loosen the cup 2 to 3 turns and then open the yellow drain valve.

Like Larry said, loosen the housing 2 to 3 turns first. Then open the yellow valve. I then continue to loosen it as it drains. No where near 1 gallon comes out. Probably at least 12 oz or so if I had to guess based on the size of the housing....Probably at least 16 oz.

when the housing is unscrewed there is an internal valve that closes and shuts off the flow of fuel completely

Ultra, It depends on your model year. The 2017 and newer trucks have a new fuel filter that is totally different from the 2011-2016 trucks.

I have replaced the filter two times.
First time I think only about 12oz of fuel drained from the filter.
The second time it was over 24oz of fuel drained.

I don’t know why there was more drainage the second time.
Yes i unscrewed the filter housing at least 3 turns and the fuel tank was less than 1/2 full.

BTW, I could hear that it was time to change the fuel filter. When I stop the truck, the fuel drain back circuit would continue to run for at least 30 seconds before shutting off. After the filter change, the fuel drain back only runs about 5-10 sec.

Thanks for all the reply's. My truck is a 15. I guess I didn't turn the filter enough before opening the drain. Thanks.
