Tach sensor vs vacuum pump

So I'm replacing my tach sensor, and as I was removing it, I realized that the vacuum pump is preventing me from removing it all the way.

Is it possible to remove the tach sensor without taking off the vacuum pump?

You have to pull the pump on serpentine trucks.

I'll add to that and say that you can remove the pump without pulling the pulley off of it. It's a pain - you have to use a wrench and loosen all three bolts together to get enough clearance, but you can remove the pump without having to remove the pulley first.

Macrobb- thanks for the reply. I'm absolutely gonna try and not pill the pulley. But just in case, I got myself a shiny new pulley puller.

Anybody know a better way to do the vacuum system? This thing is turning a 5 minute repair into a headache.

Get a Hydroboost unit for the brakes, an electric cruise control unit(if yours doesn't have one, one from a more modern gas Ford can be retrofitted), and then use a small electric vacuum pump from a '99+ SD diesel truck.

You never pulled the vac pump from an IDI van, have you? I'd take the minor hassle of removing the truck vac pump any day over the hassle of pulling half the accessories around to access my van pump.

I apologise for my complaint! I have read through your website, and the work to service an IDI van is at least twice as hard, let alone taking pictures and documenting every step.

I will, however, be researching the best way to delete this vacuum pump. One less hard to find item to break, one less draw on my serpentine belt, and one less obstacle if (and when) I need to replace my sensor again.

After reading multiple "write ups" on how easy it is to replace the tach sensor, I was mad that now I had to obtain and use a pulley puller and move a perfectly good pump to access a sensor that was giving me no real trouble besides a blinking trans light. Now my tach doesn't register anything at all and I can't drive my truck because of limp mode, and I'm kicking myself for not researching the issue further and allowing time and tools on the weekend, rather than attempting a quick Thursday night repair

I hear ya. I've pretty much assumed that no job on any IDI is a quick job, no matter who claims it is easy.

As for your vac pump, I don't think there is much of a draw on the engine. I recently had my spare pump on the workbench, and I spun it with my hands. There is some resistance, but not much really. It's not like a PS pump or Alternator. This vac pump just maintains a vacuum pressure, so it doesn't need a lot of force.

*SOLVED* Tach sensor vs vacuum pump

Hey guys, just to let you know, after trying to remove a stripped nut, and a newly broken pulley puller, it actually is possible, and quite easy to remove and install the tach sensor on a 7.3 idi turbo, as long as you control the twisting of the wires.

Here's the proof
