I recently rebuilt the NP435 trans and NP205 transfer case on my son's 1977 ford f150. Both rebuilds seemed very straight forward and went smoothly. After installation the truck transmission shifts fantastic and I am very happy with it. However, the transfer case seems to only find two positions 4L and N. I am not sure its actually in those gears, but that's the position it appears to be in. In both positions the front drive shaft spins freely! I have not been able to put it in 4H or 2WD. Truck runs in 2wd regardless of position. I really don't want to drop it and take it apart before trouble shooting any/all external possibilities. Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas? Side note: it did shift in all four positions prior to the rebuild, but due to a hub problem I never put it into 4wd. We have since replaced the hubs as well.
Something is not right, your going to have to tear it back down and carefully go back through it. You can't do much of any work on it when it's in the truck.
I'm not sure you can get the shift collars in wrong. Did you remove the shift forks from the shift rails and maybe get them on backwards? Again I'm not even sure it will go together that way. The NP205 can surely be difficult to shift so I don't know if some of it might just be that.
I'm just finishing up my first NP205 rebuild (complete with my 13 year old son tagging along!) and it shifted through the different positions fine. Good luck!
