i have an 86 f150 5.0 aod with a np208 tcase. the tcase was swaped in by the previous owner. it came from behind a manuel tranny. when you put the transmission into neutral ( N ) it wont let me shift the into 4hi, the it lets out a loud shreak like its in a bind with metal on metal contact. but if you have the transmission in park ( P ) it shift fine in 4x4. this is quite annoying when trying to wheel and you have to stop and then engage the 4x4. any ideas as to what the cause is and a good fix that doesnt kill the wallet.
Mine does roughly the same thing, I think. It also has very little noticeable detent when you shift from one position to another. I figure it's just getting worn out and in need of overhaul.
I haven't rebuilt one. Matter of fact haven't even seen a transfer case apart since watching my Dad do one almost 30 years ago. How difficult is it? Any special tools needed to rebuild a NP208F?
I was thinking about just finding another one and doing a swap. It's funny that I see on here that a lot of folks prefer other transfer cases, yet looking for one on E-bay or the classifieds they are very scarce. Lots of NP208Cs (chevy) though.
