I have a project that I am researching for and it involves a 4R100. I am turning my 4x2 1999 Expedition with a 5.4 into a 4x4. I have a transmission out of a 1999 F250 with a 5.4 (and transfer case). They are both 4R100 and I am wondering if I can put the one out of the F250 into my Expedition and if my current computer will run it and if it will bolt up? I am looking to just have the 4x4 transmission "gone thru" and freshened up before I start my project, but I'm wondering if this will work, or should I just have my 4x2 turned into a 4x4?
The only thing to check is if both transmissions have two speed sensors on top, or both do not have the speed sensors on top.
So they both had a speed sensor hole on top of the trans. The four wheel drive one didn't have a sensor there and the two wheel drive one did. So I swapped the sensor into the four wheel drive one. I made sure there was a ring inside for the sensor to sense.
Now the project is done and I am getting a code P0720 for output speed cicuit. And my speedometer doesn't work at all. There was a sensor on the tail shaft of the two wheel drive but not one on the four wheel drive. Is that the output speed sensor? Is that my issue? Any help would be immensely appreciated.
That is the output speed sensor. Most likely the 4x2 sensor isn't the right one for a 4x4 transmission.
Ok. Just so I'm clear and I under stand.
The 4x4 transmission does not have a tail shaft sensor of any kind, but it does have one on top of the housing up near the bell housing.
The 4x2 transmission has a sensor on the tail shaft and on top of the housing near the bell housing.
So where would the out put shaft sensor be on the 4x4 one if not on the tail shaft? Or do I need to swap a tail shaft housing on this to hook up the output connector for this vehicle?

It's been a long time since I looked at one of these. I think I remember that some of the 4x4s had the sensor on the transfer case input.
I changed my 2003 4r100 2 wd for a 2001 4r100 4x4 from a F-350 and ran into sensor problems. Now my 4x4 doesn't have a mechanical output sensor on the shaft..Does it mean I have to change the transfer case to a pre 92?
