E4OD missing filter

Hello all, been on here a lot but don’t often post. I picked up a 96 F150 5.8, E4OD 4x4 from a guy off craigslist. They had torn up the original transmission and had someone put in transmission out of another truck that was supposed to have been good. After install with new torq converter, the thing wants to move forward all the time. In park it comes against the pall, in reverse it just acts likes its bound up and won’t move and in ND21 it goes forward. Enter me, a few hundred buck and I drag it home. My assumption is that the forward drive clutch is welded together. I crawled under it today to start removal of the transmissision and when I pulled the pan to drain the fluid, there was no filter in there. It is my unterstanding that the filter acts like a pickup tube so the thing had to be starving for oil. Now I’m sitting here scratching my head wondering if the symptoms could be caused by just missing a filter. Does anyone have any ideas as to what a tranny would act like with no filter in there? Is there any potential for the thing to want to move forward in neutral and park because it wasn’t pumping oil?

let me know if you have any input or additional questions for me. Thanks

I would think it wouldn't even move without a filter unless they ridiculously overfilled it. From your description it does sound like the forward clutch is stuck on/welded together. However transmissions can do weird things if fluid pressure is weird. I'd try putting a filter in it.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I guess my only concern is that I will put 4 gallons of atf in there only to drain it back out if it does the same thing. I have a laymen’s understanding of how this thing operates, but was hoping for something definitive before I follow the rabbit down the hole.

I got the transmission out and apart today. It was as expected. The forward clutch was severely burned and siezed together. Also I'm sure by the gunk in the bottom of the pan that the so called good replacement wasn't as great as the previous owner thought. I guess there are no short cuts. Glad I didn't waste any time and money on putting a filter and oil in it just to find the same thing.
