did you check the fluid level before you pulled the pan? low fluid could cause this.
i haven't studied the e4od, but many trannys have the filter almost touching the pan anyway, so having it loose would only be 1/8" lower and still getting fluid into the system.

And, blageurt, I shall get a new filter, hopefully today, from a Ford dealership. The filter in the van, is not a Ford product, but is identical in all respects. I shall probably get the clip for the filter also.
Just called the local Ford dealership. The filter costs $58.00 and change. The gasket costs $20.00 and change. They have the magnet that goes between the filter and pan to stop it from hanging. It is $12.00 and change.
I shall get the magnet to hold the filter in place, and take it from there.
