Rockauto carries ACDELCO, ATP, Fram, and Wix. Is there any difference between them quality wise? Prices are within a few bucks ($21 - $27) so that doesn't make much of a difference.
Also, I noticed that they show the ATP JX150 inline magnetic filter. I thought that most of the debris and dirt in the ATF would be non-magnetic (clutch or yellow metal) so a magnetic filter wouldn't make a big difference.
Lastly, if the tranny (E4OD) starts slipping, can I add some F to alleviate slipping? It has 228k on it, and I really want it to last until the summer.
As for the trans filter I don`t have an E4OD but have read too many posts from guys who did the trans service with an after market filter only to have it drop down later and cause all sorts of problems.
If it was me I would only use OEM. Try ftepartsguy.com or DirectFordParts.com for a quote.

The friction materials in the clutches work against steel separator plates. Small filings from these plates are worn off over time, so there are small steel particles suspended in the ATF.
Anyhow, I just got my filter (looked up one day, it wasn't even in the Fedex system, 2 days later it was at my door with the cheapest shipping!!) . It's the ATP B-172, and on the box it says: "Transmission Oil Filters should be replaced every 12,000 miles". Where do they get that number?
I noticed that while the ATF looked OK on the dipstick, when I sucked out a quart just to test my 12V oil pump, it looked bad.
They get that number because they sell filters. Ford doesn't have a recommended mileage to change the filter. They only require a filter change at a rebuild.
I've personally inspected a filter that had 369,000 miles on it. It came out of an ambulance with an E4OD. The only reason the trans was torn down was the vehicle was totalled. There were maintenance records for this trans from day one. It had never been serviced. The filter was fine. It was not clogged, but there was a small amount of debris in it.
I guess that partly answers my previous question about the E4OD design life.
So maybe I can wait a few more years before finding a ZF5 for my Bronco.
Anyhow, we had one not rainy day over the weekend, so I finally did it. (raining/snowing ever since, BTW )
The 12V oil pump I bought specifically for this turned out to be rather useful, after all.
been a little change of plans... got laid off today so I guess I won't be needing to fix the old beast as soon as I planned... I'll get around to it sometime. Michigan has the highest unemployment in the country right now so wish me luck guys... I'm going to need it
