Need help figuring out whats going on with my baby. Its a 2000 Excursion 4x4 lifted beauty. Recently had issues with with overdrive staying on. When I turned it off the vehicle would have trouble shifting. Then my battery would suddenly die. Alternator was good. Today I put in a brand new battery and when I went to start it there was no crank, 2 fuses under dash were making clicking sound. I moved the battery terminals around and then the it started on the second try. Still clicking under dash, security light on, and windows moving up and down on their own. Im a do it your self kinda guy but not sure how to tackle this problem. Where do I start, any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.
Not sure if your year is the same, but my 2004 has a ground strap from the frame to the body under the passenger door. Mine was broken and caused all kinds of crazy issues.
There is no magic fix, remedy or repair for these type of problems. Good deliberate troubleshooting skills are necessary, along with patience, wiring diagrams/prints and a good multimeter.
Yep - bad grounds or a wet/corroded GEM can cause battery drain and random operation/no operation of seemingly unassociated components. Ground issues can be a chore to find, and the GEM problems, if present, look painstaking to fix (I have the "issue", but haven't tackled it yet). Looks like you have a beauty there, it will be worth the effort though. As stated above, methodical troubleshooting as in the Workshop Manual will get you there.
My guess is the clicking is the security module activated from losing power several times - the clicking is the relay to the horn, lights, or both (they may not be connected to any output, but the relays will still cycle). It should reset after unlocking the vehicle with the remote, but mine has done some wonky stuff in the past where it keeps it in "theft" mode regardless of what I do. And it's always after multiple disconnects/reconnects of the batteries.

I would not not attempt it without the factory service manuals and wiring diagram. You can find the sets on eBay, well worth the couple hundred bucks.
