I have a 1976 f150 4x4 and I am looking to put in a 400, with 4 speed manual from a 1978 custom ext cab 2 wd. Will there be an issue with using a 2 wd transmission on 4x4? 76 ford has a 203 divorced transfer case in it, currently has a c6 in it. Any help would be much appreciated!
An F150 would have a married transfer case, so a transmission from a 2wd will not work. If someone has swapped in a divorced transfer case for some reason, the 2wd transmission will work, though it won't have a mount for the transfer case shifter.
Sorry for the delayed reply. So my np 203 transfer case is married to the c6 auto on 360 1976 f150 4x4. I have a two wheel drive 400 engine with manual transmission from 78 250, but looks like 2wd transmission isn’t going to work. I have a line on a 91 manual transmission and also a 3spd manual from a 1976 bronco. I don’t have more details yet on exact transmissions. Long shot maybe, but will either of these work with the 400 or 360?
Maybe on the those transmissions. But you have an automatic, so a change to a manual will be a few more parts.
But let's go back to "what are you trying to accomplish?" A '76 360 auto 4x4 is a respectable rig. You want to swap a 400--why? If your 360 is worn out, rebuild it as a 390 or just swap out another 360.
Is that 400 something special? Or is it a stock '78?
Making a lot of changes to a vehicle can make sense. But just because you have a running 400 is no reason to redo the whole drive train in your '76.
The '91 transmission--what is that? How many speeds? The Bronco 3 speed, I would urge you to forget that one.
The 360 has seen better days and the 400 is low km and runs well. Rebuild is possible, never rebuilt one, but up for challenge, just not a lot if extra time at the moment to dive in. C6 is slipping and worn out. I like manuals and with the tranny going, I would like to swap. Unfortunately, where I live I’m having trouble locating a manual trans that is right fit. I think the t 18 or 19 is the best fit for truck and 203 tranfercase. Was hoping somehow I could work with the options I have, but not looking good.
What motor did it come from? Those have a diesel, 385 series gas and a SBF pattern. 385 series pattern will bolt to your 400 but will require some rework to make it work. And, is it a 2wd or 4x4 transmission? Also, it will require a hydraulic clutch.
