1984 IGNITION PROBLEM

1984 F150 XLT 302 4 SP: TRUCK HAS BEEN STORED IN BARN 20 YEARS, NOT STARTED
COIL HAS FIRE WHEN KEY ON BUT WHEN TURN TO CRANK, SPARK DISAPPEARS EXCEPT WHEN YOU RELEASE KEY FROM CRANKING. I HOT WIRED TO COIL AND IT GROUNDS OUT SPARK WHEN YOU CRANK TOO. COIL HAS 12 VOLT WHEN IGNITION IN ON POSITION. TRIED A NEW COIL AND SAME RESULTS. NO SPARK TO PLUGS AT ALL, NOT EVEN FROM COIL TO SPARK PLUG WIRE WITH NEW PLUG GROUNDED TO FRAME. OH YES....ACCIDENTALLY FOUND OUT SPARK TO PLUG WHEN KEY ON POSITION. SHOCKED ME...OH YA!!!
SELINOID HAD A THERMOLINK BURNED OUT FROM MISCONNECTION YEARS AGO AND I FIXED THAT. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT SHORT IN WIRE WHEN ENGAGING STARTER, MAY BE WIRE IN COLUMN SWITCH AREA. CLEANED DIST PICKUP, NEW ROTOR N CAP N SPARK PLUG WIRES, NEW BRAIN BOX AND NEW SELINOID. IF ANYONE HAS A CLUE WHAT'S GOING ON PLEASE RESPOND. THANK YOU ! THOMAS

You have 12 volt on the coil with the key in the on position. Do you also have 12v on the coil during cranking?

Just went thru something similar on an 86' with an injected 302. Theres a device that hangs off the distributor called a PIP? It could also be located on the fender well. Theres a site called http://easyautodiagnostics.com
Lots of stuff to make your troubleshooting easier

You had a TFI ignition system. A 1984 302 should still be duraspark II unless maybe it's a California model. The duraspark would have the large square silver box on the fender.

I’m not certain what I contributed actually helped you. I think it was more likely a contribution from franklin He has been very helpful to me in getting an 86 running. When it comes to these trucks I’m a rookie and don’t wish to accept undue praise. I do hope the distributor replacement fixes your issue though. Update the group when you know more. This forum and others like it is an invaluable rescource. I’m humbled by the willingness of strangers to reach out and help
good luck to you
