Today it seems that I may be in over my head. I have boxes of parts that I don't know what they are. other pieces from a donor truck that don't match what is in the original. without looking through each page of a catalog to try and find the magic picture..... I thought I would try here.
Back story, I found the truck 25 years ago in a hunting buddy's field. It reminded me of the one my dad had when I was little. So I acquired, all that was required was getting it moved from the field, the truck and gave it to him. My Dad found and purchased a second truck for a good engine, title and more parts. Move ahead 25 years, he hasn't gotten anywhere close to having the truck on the road. I made a deal with him last winter. Ill do the truck and you rebuild the engine and transmission. I brought the truck home and made good headway in disassembly and repairs. Now I am nearly ready to send the cab, doors and hood off to paint. Looking at parts in all of the boxes today was a little overwhelming. He doesn't know what some of them are, some similar items are from different year trucks, can components be rebuilt? are the components worth rebuilding? should I buy new? These are all of the questions that I am not sure I know the answer to today.
Steady Big Guy. This is a hobby for enjoyment - no need to stress.
Let's start at a beginning and pick a starting point. Show us pics of the body parts in question and we can guide you. Your question on components needs some more detail. What components, specifically? Pics also are a great help.
Does your Dad have the experience to rebuild the engine/tranny?
Hey Blick,
Welcome Aboard.... Post some pics of the parts as they come out of the boxes.
I'm fairly certain this crowd can identify most of it. Let's see your truck body -
so we know what you are working with...
Blick, welcome to FTE the best Ford truck Forum on the world wide! This is the place that can help you. As stated above show us pics of the parts in question.
Also show us pictures of your truck and the parts truck.
The parts truck doesn't exist anymore. Just pieces included when I went back home to gather up odds and ends. My Dad wants it to look / be original within reason. He was a tech back in the day and worked on this era cars and trucks in the garage he worked in. He is quite the mechanic still, just never prioritized the truck. As age caught up with him.... he was the last to admit that he wouldn't get to the truck. The components I was referring to include radio, heater, gauge cluster, wiper motor.
Hey Blick,
That bed looks pretty rough... very similar to what we had. We fixed our's but it took a lot of man hours... a lot.
Midwest Early Ford sells replacement beds... the one's with flat sides are a pretty good value. The older '50 style with the half moon
on the inside sides - pretty pricey at $1800 or so when we did our's.
Welcome. It's good to see another 49 in here. My bed was like yours so it's sitting in the field with my parts truck. I hope to buy another bed at the truck show in October. It is cheaper for me to buy a new one and not try to fix the old bed. Keep us posted and we like pictures
Blick,
Good start on the pics. You have an honest looking, unmolested truck with solid bones. Are you up for the body work challenges? Clearly the bed has a few rust outs and I'm assuming the fenders do also. If the hood, cab, and doors are paint ready, we'll assume no issues for the moment.
So, the fenders. Starting with the fronts, show us what you've got from both the donor and build truck. If the grille / front vanances are handy, let's see those as well.
A number of us, especially me, had no business taking on project builds. Armed only with ignorance and enthusiasm, most anyone can bring a nearly stock truck back. Certainly, there are some costs and time requirements. From the pics, it appears you have garage space and a Shop Manual at the ready. Excellent. You can do this. We can help.
I know these are defroster adapters. Why the difference? Even the way the hose adapters attach is different. Assume the bar across was an update to move air better.
Both hoods have holes in place for some type of hood ornament. This piece was in the boxes....was an ornament installed? The holes line up with both hoods.
