I don't LOVE my HOA but I do appreciate most of what they do for many of the same reasons you posted. People that don't like the concept of an HOA shouldn't live in one. Mainly so we don't have to hear them complaining.
...and this is exactly my point, thank you. Almost everyone I know that lives in one complains about it like they have norther options, and when I ask "why don't you just move out?", they get all defensive and start talking about how they are upside down because the housing market this and that. Yet these communities with all these seemingly ridiculous regulations are supposed to protect your property value. Again, not trying to be a ****, I still just don't get it. Well I partially do anyway...and for a county, city, or town to mandate something like this with law is absolutely reprehensible and elitist beyond reproach. I understand ordinances in order to keep the place looking nice but one must, by law, establish one of these HOA's??? Man I'm glad I have choices!
Hell will freeze over before I ever buy another HOA property.... I owned a townhouse where my mom
lived, I had people flagging me down and screaming at me to do their property maintenance.... Gee,
I drive a red truck, the property management company has red trucks, I must be part of the maintenance crew...
I had one dingbat that lived in a unit on the front of the building demand I move my truck... because the
sun was reflecting off the windshield into her townhouse and giving her a headache... I told her to
pull her window shade down... she called the HOA *****..... told them to **** off, my truck was legally
parked and oh, by the way, I'm not a visitor, I OWN THE UNIT...
Ford (and probably others) still classify F350's as "1 Ton" and F250's as "3/4" tons. You can find this info in the Fleet spec pages under "nominal tonnage" ratings.
You know, I've never understood how someone parking a motor home, travel trailer, or pickup on THEIR OWN property or in THEIR OWN driveway has any affect on you or the neighbors. Seriously, how does that hurt you? I get the grass cutting (but that's a stretch, because, well, sometimes life happens and you just don't have the time to cut the dam grass!), the 6 trashy cars parked out front, but a perfectly fine RV? Or a frickin pickup truck? Seriously?? My sister lived in one where they couldn't put their trash dumpster by the curb the dam night before trash pickup...when the trash truck came before 7:00 in the morning! So they had to get it out there after 5 am and before 7 am or they didn't get their trash picked up.
I'm just glad I live on 48 acres with no neighbors that I can see or can see me. Problem solved. Oh, and I keep ALL my stuff in the garage or detached garage. But, we also have the common courtesy to mind our own dam business and not worry about what anyone else has parked out front of their house.
Because it is all SUBJECTIVE a rat trap may be beautiful in the eyes of the owner . The city will not allow RV's for example. You live where you should, and you do not have to worry about it. I love my HOA as I said before --- protectants me from people who do not care, are just against having to do anything to keep up their property. Takes all kinds and I am on of those people some hate because I will drop a dime on them to the City to protect my property value in a New York minute.

Good for you! Just remember to enjoy the payback when someone rats you out. You rat out enough people and they will use any reason to do it to you. Real or otherwise.

I follow the letter of the Regs….. No reason to do as I say and not as I do.... It is all about protecting my $$$$$'s My home is paid for and I take great pride in keeping it perfect.
At least you can have a truck in there overnight. Our old HOA (we moved) stated that no trucks inside of the gates (gated community) between the hours of 1am and 6am. Stupid. There were four or five nice pickups parked on the curb outside every night. There were some real POS cars that got to stay in but no pickups at all.
Thanks everyone for the info. Here is what it says on our rules page word for word. Now I just noticed it says exceeding one ton
No motor vehicle classed by manufacturer rating as exceeding one ton, mobile home, mini-motor home, travel trailer, recreational vehicle, tent trailer, trailer, camper, boat, boat trailer or other similar equipment or vehicle may be parked or maintained, constructed, reconstructed, or repaired on any lot so as to be visible from neighboring property, the common areas or the streets
A F350 does not “EXCEED ONE TON”. So your good to go from reading the rules you posted.
If others have been harassed with F350 or 3500 trucks I’d just replace the side badges with the F250 badges. Life’s too short to get excited over this.
I enjoyed playing head games with my former HOA. My HOA tried to bust me for a portable dog run in my backyard. The rules stated Fences and Hedges must be pre approved by the board and since I hadn’t been given approval it would need to be removed. I took aerial photos of every board members property and brought them to the next meeting and asked to see the pre approval for each board members hedges so I could follow the same procedure. Of course none of the board members had applied for or has an approval in the files.
I then took a photo to the president’s wall mounted air conditioner in his garage and had building code enforcement fine him for not pulling a building permit for the AC.
Took another aerial photo photo of a hidden shed in another board member’s back yard and had the city building department write up a code violation because it didn’t meet hurricane code. He was given 30 days to remove the shed or be fined daily.
The board then told me they would approve a hedge in my backyard to keep my dog contained but I would need to submit plot plan where the hedges would go. So I submitted a plan with the existing dog run noted on the plan stating that the dog run would remain until hedges were planted. They approved the plan. 6 months later they sent me a letter that I was in violation with the dog run. I responded that I have a signed approval for a dog run until hedges are planted and since hedges haven’t yet been planted the dog run would remain. Being it was a portable dog run a building permit wasn’t required.
I read this thread and shake my head. I cannot for the life of me understand how someone would go to work to pay money for a mortgage and taxes...AND pay HOA fees so that other people could tell you what to do with YOUR property that YOU, not them, are paying for. To me, this goes against every notion of America and freedom I've known. Most cities and towns have simple ordinances already in place that require your lawn to be occasionally cut and the trash to be removed. You don't need an HOA to do that. And frankly, if I want my lawn to be a hayfield...so be it! I'm paying for it, not you.
Based upon what logic does an HOA think parking a $70k F-350 dually in your driveway is bad? Would they be happier if you parked a 1991 Escort in the driveway that "met all the criteria?"
I think the truck rule is intended for commercial vehicles and while I don't have a problem with commercial vehicles within reason, I can see why some would want to have a rule against it. You would have a business owner parking multiple company trucks on a public street because they can. Now I think you are good with the F-350 as it does not exceed 1 ton as your HOA rules state.
I think until you live next to a bad neighbor, in terms of not maintaining their yard, parking 5 junk cars, boats, RV's (Think American Pickers), you do not think a HOA is necessary. I have an HOA and they don't have too many crazy rules, they do have a problem with enforcing which is both good and bad. Mine is really reasonable $325/year and includes a community pool.
My neighborhood doesn't allow RV's or Travel Trailers to be stored in the neighborhood or on the road but many of us bring them to the house for the days leading up to or after a trip for loading/unloading, with out issue.
I think you are good to go since you don't "exceed" a one ton.
Since this has turned into a debate about HOA's and after reading the comments I can see both sides of the issue. I have no experience with one but sometimes wish I had a way to protect the value of my property from those who don't care about theirs. We live in a development which started in the 70's, died out for 20 or so years then took off again in the early 2K's. There are 1400 sq ft homes up to 5000 sq ft which are segregated by streets. Some of the older homes have been turned into rentals, some with obviously more than one family, cars and trucks parked on both sides of the streets, unmowed and unkept yards, maintenance issues, boats and travel trailers in driveways, etc. I try to ignore it but I can see it affecting the sale price of a home that has been kept up. Fortunately there are not many homes like this but they do stand out. We have a neighborhood Facebook page where folks will point out problems and sometimes the city is called for help but it usually results in no change. I can see where an HOA would be useful and an enforcer.
I'm a little bit of the type that says it's my property and I'll do what I dang well please but I'm also mindful of how what I do affects someone else. If we remember the great commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves there would never be an issue.
What possible benefits can one get that could possibly outweigh these ridiculous restrictions? I have never understood the appeal of living in such a neighborhood that dictates how you live your life, vehicles you buy, flags you fly etc. when there are other options (not living anywhere there is a HOA)
