Maximum safe engine oil temperature?

2015 6.7. I'm wondering what the maximum safe engine oil temperature is. Truck normally runs around 194-204 depending. I've been as high as 249 towing a heavy trailer up a steep grade.

Asking this question because on Sunday I need to drive 400 miles with a new straight blade snow plow mounted up and there will be a fair amount of hills. Unfortunately my trailer isn't with me and the bed of the truck will be loaded with 4k-ish lbs of cargo so I can't just drop the plow in the bed.

Ambient temperature today was 70* and the engine oil got up to 225* just driving around town. Granted that was with the plow raised all the way up. For the trip I'm planning to keep it about 5 inches off the ground.

At what temp should I stop and let the truck cool down?

Mine 6.7L hits about 242° F on every mountain pass here in Colorado when I'm towing my toy hauler (11k GVWR).

If you have a tuner, consider dropping to a less aggressive tune. I don't know anything about tuning the diesels. On my prior truck if I left it in my performance tune it would get quite hot when towing.

The engine will derate about 250F. I have never seen that even with 16K behind me. I have seen 248F pretty routinely on those long grades and passes in Colorado. Personally I would not worry until it gets to that temp. If you pull over, do not shut it down, let it idle to cool.

I've hit 250 with mine. I have a tune so it can be easy. Was worried about going over but the more I read about these threads the more often I hear people reaching 240-250 which 'seems' to be safe. The good thing is it cools down pretty quick too. Like senix says I think it does derate around that temp although I haven't experienced it yet. Maybe fluctuates a few degrees. I'll have to push mine a little higher next time and see what happens lol. You'd think there would be a Ford Tech here that could answer that for us. Gosh knows there have been a lot of these oil temp threads! Sorry 90pioneer. Hope I didn't steal your thread there. I'm as interested as you. Good luck.

With the high oil temps I see on my truck pulling my 5th wheel is the main reason i only use full synthetic oil.

Hit 250* today towing. Highest I've ever seen with either of my 6.7s. No de-rate. Was topping Mont Eagle when she hit 250. She cooled down pretty quick. Run LE 5w40 so I'm not worried about it. For an oil temp de-rate, I believe the magic number is 257*.

Two years ago we went to Yellowstone. We went through Boise, ID on the way back. Headed out of Boise headed toward McCall there is a nice steep grade and it was 100 degrees outside. Oil temp read 246 and I posted this same question. I heard at least one comment then that said its actually ok to run the diesel hot or at least that the diesel likes to run hot like that. I can say I had no problems then and still have had no problems.

Oil breakdown temperatures vary by brand, but 265 degrees is about where many start to break down.
