Tranny help. NP435

79 F150 4x4 custom long bed.
300 straight.
NP435 tranny.
3:50 gears
9in rear.
dana 44
NP205 transfer case

About 2 months ago I had a new straight 6 and clutch put in. Everything was good, smooth, nice.
Yesterday, I go to Commercial Tire and have them put on new tires for me. The second they get it down, I can no longer shift into gears. (I now right.. wtf).
Not that these things are related.. what would you say to them? fnA... but anyways..
I checked my clutch adjustment nuts, even adjusted them out further.
I drained the tranny oil and re-filled it, it only took like 3qt until it was coming out the fill bolt and from what I can see online, it should take like 6.7qt. So... I don't know. But it's clean oil and I can now feel the oil in there with my finger, as before I couldn't.

So, she is stuck in neutral. I CAN muscle into a gear. and once moving.. I can, most the time shift. Then sometimes it's even really smooth all of a sudden and like, 'wow, it's fixed'. But then come to a stop, can't get into reverse again and have to move her a bit to do so again.

What do ya guys think. Or, what would you do next.
I was thinking of hitting the junkyard this weekend and from my understanding, they put this NP435 into F series up until '92.
So, if it IS bad, and I do go seeking a 'newer' one in the JY, what numbers should match up?
From mine, I can read:
D9TA7003 LA FETI
3 20 79 1 435
C-13894
6 ff

Idk. What's my best options ya think.

Depending on how level you have the truck/trans then a little over 3qts is accurate. Not sure how you'd fit more than that, without just dumping it in through the shifter housing.

As for your shifting issues, it sounds like with the motor off, you can shift through all 4 gears and Reverse, but when the motor is running, you are unable to shift without a lot of effort?
Or is this occurring regardless of motor running or not?

Ok thanks. Makes sense.

This is reguardless of running or not. Although when going down the road, it's easier. I can push and it will fall into gear finally, or sometimes, smoothly.

As I'm looking around. I'm not sure what these numbers mean.
C-13894
6 ff

Like, mine has a "6 ff" Another one I see matches all numbers but says "4 R" I think.

Sounds like something going on with possibly the shift forks. They're pretty easy to rebuild, and rebuild kits are fairly inexpensive when compared to buying one of unknown condition from JY or other source.

Your clutch isn't disengaging., sounds to me. On my '77 one of the fingers on the Long style pressure plate had a pivot pin come loose and it allowed the finger to move and lock up with the clutch disk center. I had to pull the transmission and replace pressure plate. Luckily I had one in stock.

If that isn't the case it's easy to get at the top of the transmission and see for yourself or with the help of an experienced friend. Remove seat, remove carpet, remove transmission cover on the floor. Pull the top cover with our without the shift lever still in. Once you figure it out it's easier to remove lever first. Then you can see directly into the transmission. Overfilling with gear oil or many other gear oil foulups should not make the transmission impossible to shift.

R.

Thanks guys. Just kinda freaking out as its my DD.
Took it to my mech, let him drive it around. He said it feels like the shifter (top area) isn't working right.
Pulled off the top aluminum part, opened it up. Now waiting for him to come over and check it. I have no clue what I'm looking at. Looks awesome though... steampunk gears.
Got a chance to clean that area.. holy shiz.. tons of build up, up there. scrape, scrape. Even when they are done, I'm cleaning the crap out of all of this.
We'll see when he comes over.

New Process 435: The shift lever retainer cap (7220 in pic) has two notches, it's retained to the shift tower with two pins (7221).

To remove this cap (shift lever in neutral), it must be pressed down by hand and held down while turning it counterclockwise.

People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches. Not pleasant!

When this occurs, the truck can no longer be shifted.

B8T-7220-D .. NP435 Shift Lever Retainer Cap / Obsolete

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 35 = 800-476-9653.

If I go to the JY today and pull the top aluminum cover, shifter, forks, all in one assembly, do you guys think it matters if it came off another np435 that had different gear ratios, or is the top shift area all universal. ?

Hey ND. Do you think all NP435's used the same part numbers for the fork shoes/pads?
Up until 92.. ? Meaning at the JY, I could get the shoes from any year basically.

"
2) C2TZ-7C430-B (replaced C2TZ-7C430-A) .. 3-4 Shift Fork Nylon Insert / 3/4" long / 1/2" O/A width / Obsolete
---------------------------------------------------------
2) D2TZ-7C430-B (replaced D2TZ-7C430-A) .. 1-2 Shift Fork Nylon Insert / 3/4" long / .30" wide / 1/4" thick / Obsolete
"

Why would you want used parts when NOS is available? Both Carpenter & Green Sales have dozens of each.

Because I need my truck by tomrw morning and it's sunday.
I noticed I'm missing a couple nylon pads. Maybe that's the issue.
I'll walk over to Oreally's and see if they have them. If not, I need to hit the JY today.

Found the issue.
These tubes under the shifter were all bound up. You have to hit them hard for the center one to move. Even though they look just fine...
So.. went to JY today and pulled one from a 74. It was all smooth while on the doner.
Got home just now, RTV seal. Put it on. Now I have all gears except 2nd. I must not now how to align the forks.. but.. hmm... there is no video out there showing me either.
Still happy.

*edit. 1 person in the history of mankind has posted a single photo. I found it. Helped. All gears and, this $17 1974 shifter top, feels way better than mine every did.
