I recently bought a 78 F250 4x4. This truck is fixed up nice and I love it. However when I bought it, I knew that the tranny was not in great shape. It has the np435. It has some chatter in 2nd and 3rd gear if you lay into the go pedal too much, but the main problem is the incredibly slow shifting. I have to go really slow when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, and really none of the gears come without a lot encouragement. I am used to driving a 4 speed. I have a 91 F150 with a t18.
My question is, if I either swap a fresh np435 or rebuild the one I have, will it ever shift as good as the t18 in my '91? Or will it atleast be close? I know it is a truck and all, but I can see how it would get up and move a lot better if I could run through the gears like I would like to. Part of what is annoying me, is that this truck has a really built motor, and I feel like I'm not getting the full potential out of it because of the pain of shifting.
I look forward to your comments,
Morgan.

Morgan, the NP435 will never shift as quickly as a car transmission, but it shifts as well as any heavy-duty truck trans will.
I'd take a look at the clutch disengagement first. If it's dragging, that could cause the poor shifting. Another thing to check is the oil type and level. Maybe it's low....? The specs on my 78 call for 80-90 gear oil, but some earlier models specify 50w motor oil.
Hey thanks for the help. I've never owned a car, so I won't know what I'm missing
That is good to hear, I found a local fellow with a 435 that is supposed to be in good shape for $125. So I'll either swap it in, or rebuild it if need be, and then swap. Either way, I will have little down time with my truck. Thanks again.
