New Excursion Owner

Hello, hoping to find some help here. I just purchased a 2000 Excursion RWD V10 157xxx. I know it needs a lot of things but my first question is where could I find a dual steering damper for this and do they make them for RWD? Also I know it has a miss fire which I am kinda worried about but hoping it's just a coil.

Welcome to the EX forum!

Why are you looking for a dual steering stabilizer? Are you trying to correct some steering/suspension issue?
With 157K on it, do you know the maintenance history at all? Have the plugs been changed yet? If not, or if unknown, I would start off with all new plugs and boots, then with them freshly changed evaluate the COPs. These COPs tend to live very long lives and only need to be changed when failed.
For plugs you will want Motorcraft SP-479.
Boots with springs Denso (they are the OEM manufacturer for Motorcraft) #671-0001.
And if a new COP (coil) is needed the Denso (again OEM stuff) #673-6000 is about half the price of Motorcraft for the EXACT same coils.
The GearWrench #80546 5/8"X6" swivel socket makes the plug change much easier.
Very important, the '00 heads only have 4 threads for the plugs (design was improved in '03) and the factory plug torque was only 11ft/lbs, which isn't very tight. It is not uncommon for these early motors to blow out plugs that have either worked loose over time or were not properly torqued when changed. Many owners here have had very good results with slightly over torqueing the plugs to 25/27 ft/lbs, this seems to keep them well seated. It is also a very good idea to use compressed air to blow out the plug wells before removing the old plugs, this gets all (or at least most) of the sand and grit out so it can't get into the threads on installation.

Hey, welcome to the best Excursion forum on the internet!

For your question above, before we answer that, lemme echo Tom's post by asking, why do you want to add a dual steering damper?

We "ask" that question because we know most people have issues with the 4x4 stock suspension on the Excursion, and this forum has the various cures for what ails the suspension, down pat, in my not so humble opinion.

We have a lot of info here at your fingertips. You've come to the right place.

Check out the tech folder sticky thread (Read First section of threads) and peruse the different help topics we have there to familiarize yourself with your Excursion.

X3 on why are you asking about a steering dampener? Is it wandering in the straights, rolling excessively in turns, ....
Also, just to confirm, yours is a 2WD?
The steering on our 2002 2WD is rock solid firm and has no steering dampener like the 4x4s.
When we bought ours at 104k there were a couple of loose tie rod ends and the shocks were gone.
Rolling in turns was vastly improved when I added a rear anti-roll bar.
Your misfire is most likely the boots if they have never been changed, the coils are probably fine.

Thanks for all of the responses and tips. I was told that trucks this size will have play in the steering so i was thinking the damper would help it out. The problem with the steering started by replacing the steering gear that a friend and I had replaced because there was play in the steering. But with the new (reman) gear in it got super super stiff especially at a dead stop. So I took it to a shop and they said it was the pump. New (reman) pump in and they say its better but it starts to get stiff again. I also had them replace the belt and tensioner. I work at a parts store so I have a lot of access to parts for it. The truck was actually a customers and he sold it to me. My co-worker told me after i bought it that he believes that the cylinder #6 plug is stripped. And yeah Rwd. Thanks for the help guys.

I have a 2WD, and when I was shopping for my steering stabilizer, I only saw single ones, I think all the double ones I saw were for the 4WD models, not sure though.

I had #3 blow out and have been very pleased with the Timesert repair kit.
Do not use a helicoil, Timesert has a special insert to repair helicoil blow outs.
Does yours have the lower radiator tank trans cooler?
The trans cooler was omitted in early 2000 Exs.

(Different topic - since you work at a parts store, are there any 2 row radiators available for a 2003 5.4L Expedition with tow package?)

I didn't see radiator with 2 row. And I'm not sure if it has the trans cooler I should be getting it back tomorrow and I'll find out then. I also know there's a small leak I believe it's from the rear main but it's leaking right onto the exhaust and making smoke.

Thanks for checking on the 2 row radiator.
I think the OEM radiator is a 2 row and I can't find any supplier that makes a 2 row replacement, haven't checked Ford.
Ours recently developed a small oil leak at the rear corner of the passenger side head gasket which drips on the exhaust manifold/pipe flange, then runs down the pipe getting burned off before any hits the ground.
Is your leak engine oil or trans fluid?
The front trans seal is a weak link.

No problem. I had a listing for a Motor craft but I didn't carry it and it didn't show me any specs on it so idk on that one. And would you guys have any tips or heads up because I would really want to drive it up to Georgia from South FL by October and I'm just trying to make sure it'll make it without any worries.

2 row radiators are old school from back when. Modern manufacturing techniques and especially performance aluminum radiators use a single wide core rather then 2 smaller cores because it allows more contact with the fins which is where the cooling takes place.

IIRC ford uses a 7/8” core, Check rockauto as I remember a few vendors offering a slightly larger 1” core.
if you are running hot towing I’d be more suspect of the fan clutch or water pump then the single core radiator.

Do you have the part no. for the Expedition Motorcraft radiator?
Our Excursion came with a 2 row radiator and about half of the aftermarket ones I've seen are 1 or 2 row versions.
The 2 row Excrusion radiators are all around 2.25" thick.
I picked up a Mishimoto R2171-AT OEM style on a great sale which has a 2.25" 2 row core and looks well made.
I think they have this radiator for the Excursion V10 because it happens to be the same radiator for the 7.3L.
The 6.0L radiator is different partly because the trans cooler ports are one size larger, not sure on overall mounting size.
