Post Sparkplug questions

Hi all,
I have a few of easy questions about changing the plugs on my 2000 F350. I have at least 1 bad COP, so I'm going to have to hunt that down too.

1. Since I'm in there and the truck is pushing 90,000, is it a good investment to change the plug boots out too?

2. Where exactly do you put the dilectric grease at on the boots? Inside, all over, etc.

3. Where can you buy the boots at? Will Advanced, Autozone, Napa or the like have them?

4. Are all of the COP's manufactured in the same place or is there a store brand that I should stay away from?

5. I don't have a torque wrench that goes down to 13lbs for the plugs. (It is 13, right?) Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Can I get away without one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

One thing most people don't do. Since you have aluminum heads you NEED to put some antiseeze on the new plugs.

well i always tighten the spark plugs by hand i just make sure there tight but not to tight i would put some antiseeze on the plugs but not to much ONLY on the treads. the dielectice grease should be used at the ends of boots. the boots can be bought at just about any store like the ones you mentioned. i would only change them if they are splitting or they feel dry and stiff. as for the coils you can also get other places than the dealer a good general rule of them if 3 go down replace them all. if you need more help let me know

that is a really bad idea. you need to torque these plugs down to 13 ft pounds no more no less.

well its not worth arguing over but i have had to fix many plug holes that guys torqued the treads right out of. A good rule of thumb is when doing plugs by hand to run them in untill they stop with a hose on the tip of the plug then with a 3/8 hand rachet tighten the plug. You should be able to feel when it is tight enough. I have been working on cars for about 15 years and i have never used a torque wrench on plugs and i would guess that if you asked any mechanic they would tell you the same. but thats up to each person to decide.

Just be aware that ford already has a problem with spark plug threads blowing out of the head on there own. Accorrding to ford the only repair is to replace the head.
The good news for everyone else is that there is a company that sells a kit which installs a thread insert into the head that is much stronger than the way the factory built it.
