I just bought a 2002 Excursion XLT with 55k miles on it.I have been reading all the plug issue threads I could find just to be aware of what I need to do to avoid it.I have known about this issue for a few years now....so here's my question since I didn't see it mentioned. Is this problem only after the factory plugs are changed or do I need to watch the stockers as well?
Just to answer your question, this problen can occur anytime, most prominently if the stock plugs are left in for a long time and then removed.
Naturally, the threads will be OK with the factory plugs and if changed regularly. However, if the plugs are left in well past the service interval (50,000 to 60,000 miles) there could be problems.
When they are removed, sometimes the threads gall and pull the aluminum threads out of the head, or, damage the threads to the point of stripping when the new plugs are installed.
Simply put, the longer the plugs are left unmaintained, the higher the risk of thread damage.
In your situation, you should be fine changing them now, and, of course, use penatrating oil, etc... and dont forget anti seize on the new plugs.
Good luck, congrats on your purchase, and welcome to FTE!
