2017 F350 Lariat. Tailgate won’t open. Pull handle acts as if it’s locked. The tailgate handle free wheels like linkage or something inside the tailgate has come detached.
It’s still under warranty. It scheduled to be traded later this week for a 19 F350 or as soon as the new truck arrives.
Any ideas what to try rather than go to dealer for a fix?
Is the truck configured to unlock all doors at the same time or does it take a second press if the fob to do it?
When you unlock all the doors, does the tailgate unlock? You should hear the actuator being activated. It not, the fuse is blown or the actuator is not working.
Since its under warranty I would take it to the dealer.
You can also search in the forum for threads about the tailgate not unlocking. There are several.
I recently bought a preowned 2018 250 with roughly 28,000 miles on it. Tailgate wouldn't open exactly how you described, dealer said a latch was corroded preventing the tailgate from opening and replaced it. I asked why a truck so new would have a corrosion problem and the guy gave me a classic useless answer. Rest of the truck seems corrosion free so it's hard to say what exactly caused it.
linkage is disconnected. you will have to remove the panel on the back of the tailgate to be able to manually pull the linkage and unlock the gate from the bed.
Since it is under warranty I'd have the dealer do it since there is likely something of a plastic nature that is broke.
my '17 250 had same problem. the rod from the handle to the mechanism came off at the plastic clip on the mechanism...as it turned out, the side rods are to be yellow clips and the handle one is a green clip. ( different part numbers) All 3 of mine were yellow and mounted on top of the mechanism. Was faster for me to buy the Green clip at parts counter($5) and mount it under mechanism and set rod back in it, like it should have been. Problem solved.
Fortunately this happened after I removed my BakFlip F1 in preparation to trade the truck in. It would have been a real hassle if the BajFlip was still mounted.
New truck....2 weeks old. Tail gate won’t open. Come on FORD!
Open panel and check it..or dealer..... Mine had a wrong plastic clip and it was mounted on wrong side of bracket....ordered right clip $5 (cheaper than day at dealer)
I found if it is tried to open with handle and it's locked you can pull rod out of clip, and will not open...but button if u have it should still work
