In my case with the diesel, they didn't at the time at least, make a oil filter sandwich to allow running lines for an aux oil cooler so I had to buy a remote mount oil filter, which fortunately they do make,in order to get my aux cooling lines run.
I would have preferred to just kept my filter were it was.

I ran a dual remote filter on the inside of the passenger frame rail, right under the core support. Mount the filter(s) so they screw in from the bottom. That way when you fill the filter(s) with new oil, it doesn't spill out as you screw them on. Each filter had an aluminum heatsink wrapped around it for a bit of extra cooling.

No, if I do something with the intake, I will fab something up myself where I can pull outside air. As for what's wrong with the current location I am going to assume we are back on the oil filter, and the answer is I want to simplify the cooling system, getting rid of the oil cooler mounted to the block. I have a problem with a re-accurring slow coolant leak from it.

pull the oil cooler adapter puck off and screw a FL1a on. That's the simplest route.

mine I spoke of above had the dual remote filters and the factory oil cooler still functioning. But that was 10 years ago.

On the 4x4 F350s with a 460/7.5l the oil filter will not fit to the block due to interference from the cross member. On older models, an adaptor is used to locate a full size FL1A filter forward of the cross member and on newer models, a heat exchanger was incorporated into the adaptor. Both setups had their own problems which I would like to avoid by relocating the filter and adding an air cooled cooler.
