Although all the springs I made as a gunsmith never had linear rates no matter what tapers I put on them.
.
my guess is you were measuring trigger pull and not just the spring. The trigger mechanism can be progressive due to cam action giving a progressive reading during its travel.
If you remove material from a spring or change it’s length it will change the spring rate but the rate is still linear. . If you add a cam to the mechanism it can make it progressive. Or if you were using a coil spring you can make the spring progressive by changing the coil spacing along the length of the spring since this changes the segment length.
Not trigger pull. I made springs. Flat and v shaped. Coil, too, but not often. A few clock like springs here and there. All shaped by hand, heat treated and the proofed. Measuring rate was part and parcel. But none of them were buggy springs like on our trucks. Different animals, i guess.
Hey Bion. I have W codes on the front and Modded C codes on the rear of my Ex. I like the combination very much. Ordered them from Ace Ford. Did the work in the driveway about a year ago. If you need to go for a test drive let me know.

I have the W code up front and F code in the rear of my Ex. Suspensions are funny. We change parts from the factory because of 'fill in the reason', and almost always, it ends up better. Better is of course subjective.
That said, I do like my setup, I also have a Hard Notch Custom's bumper, a 11.5k winch in the front and Bilstein 5100s (single). It does ride like a truck. I think it rides better (not be cause its mine, but its just nicer over the cracks and bumps and that could be directly related to sidewall height and wheel dia.) than my brothers supercharged Range Rover.
I've found some references that they were also used for f250/350 2WD monobeam leaf spring suspension. I would say that that is probably for a 2WD snow package.
2wd Excursions have coil springs up front, so I'm thinking any references to W's and 2wd will probably be two different springs.

what is "progressive" about these springs is the individual spring lengths as you can see.
what has happened as a result is many people confuse "progressive length" to mean the same as "progressive rate"
Makes sense, especially when you have garage gearheads trying to dissect and figure out suspension optimization without any background in the engineering aspects of suspensions.
Bion, with the W's running in between the V's and the X's, as I used to say years ago when I first did my V's, I wish I had gone with the W's, just because. Then, about 5 years later Tom "WE3ZS" did his modded X's and I decided I liked that even better, LOL!
